GOLD POINT NEVADA

BURRRRRRRRRRRP.
Well excuse me. I'll try not to do that again. My only excuse is that I'm still full from last weeks annual day after Thanksgiving turkey dinner.
How was your big meal? Ours was enormous!!! We had over 70 guests that came out this year to gorge themselves on 70 pounds of turkey, 28 pounds of honey ham, 35 pounds of smashed potatoes with sour cream, chives and cream cheese whipped in, yams dotted with marshmallows, two kinds of stuffing, coleslaw, fruit salad, corn, green beans, and of course cranberry sauce. This was served after the veggie tray and 160 deviled egg halves. All of this was followed up by a wide variety of pies and cakes.
I have to say thanks to all the generous people who brought extra pies, chips, cakes and other goodies such as bottles of wine and whiskey. We served everything but Tums and Rolaids that Friday.
There were another 50 or so that showed up throughout the weekend.
At this time we have to right another wrong that has been done. In the last newsletter I had mentioned that Dan, who was one of the pushers in the Brothel Bed Races for our team was part of the over 50 crowd. I received a tongue lashing for making him old before his time. He is under 50!!!
While we are on the subject of turkeys and Dan it's time to bring up something else. No, Dan is not a turkey. I was not going to say that. What I wanted to say is that Dan, Peg, Andrew and Bob get a very big thank you for all their help that day. We would have had a real problem had it not been for the Adam's Family. They helped out cleaning the saloon, washing dishes, tending bar, cooking food and numerous other odd jobs. Now see, their not ooky, kooky or spooky. Their just great helpers.
We want to thank all the other people who helped out that day also. The names are too numerous to mention and if I was to forget just one person I would feel bad. So, since you know who you are we thank you very much.
I'm about half way through posting in the guestbook. For those of you that don't know, I had to go to another program to keep all the bad things off the guestbook. It may take a while longer to finish because my new job keeps me very busy and away from Gold Point.
Speaking of my new job. Now that it's official I will tell you that I've been made a foreman at the new Wynn Resorts Hotel being built on the site of the old Desert Inn. It will have about 4000 rooms, plus or minus, and be at around 60 stories. That will make it the tallest hotel in the state. The cost I've been told is around 2.2 billion dollars.
It will keep me away from Gold Point for about a year and a half. Until overtime starts I will only be able to get back on the weekends.
In my absence Pat and Sandy will be taking care of the guests who come for the Bed and Breakfast. Those who wish to see me will have to visit us on a Saturday.
The biggest reason for taking this job is Gold Point. With the steady money coming in for over a year we will be able to make a lot of progress on projects we have delayed for lack of funds.
Pat is already working around Gold Point on different things.
He has completed the new porch in front of Andres and the wood sidewalk from that porch over to the porch on Hornsilver. Between the two cabins we have also put up a hitching post.
This week he is going to install larger pipes from the propane tank to the cook shack. After that he will extend the porch on the North side of the Saloon about 18 feet to accommodate another band next year at the 3rd Annual Firemen's Benefit Chili Cook-off. Then build more picnic tables. Let's not forget the brick sh** house. The list is long.
I will still be doing what I can when I'm here on the weekends. Today, with the help from Phil and Fred, we finished putting the shingles on the West side of Hornsilver. Next weekend I'll finish up the roof by putting on the ridge caps.
Last Sunday we had our first mercy air helicopter land at the newly graded air strip here in Gold Point. Seems a hunter up on the South side of MacGruder Mountain fell and broke his leg. The medics finally took off again and landed closer to him then flew him to Pahrump for medical treatment.
Some recent donations---an old chair from Kay from Pahrump and an old rocker and 6 old bent woods from Janice of Tonopah.
A real nice donation is made from Steve from Spearmint Rhino Companies. He is doing a remodel on the Spearmint Rhino Gentlemen's Club in Las Vegas. They took out the old walk-in refrigerator to put in a larger one. Steve has saved us all the compressor and related parts so we can build our own cooler up here. Since our parties are growing it is a badly needed item.
Now some "hot" news about the Gold Point Volunteer Fire Department. We have recently been notified by the Nevada Division of Forestry that we have been awarded a $10,000.00 grant for equipment. With that we all 6 of us will be getting new wild land fire fighting turnouts. They are a lighter weight material than for structure fires. Plus 1200 feet of new hoses and other needed items. We thank them and the people who paid taxes to make this possible.
The most recent donation is that new (to us) 4000 gallon 1953 Diamond T tanker donated by Nye County. It was picked up by the Esmeralda County Road Department a couple of weeks ago and brought to Goldfield. They are going thru it making sure everything is working properly before bringing it out to Gold Point. We have full use of it and so do they if they are in need of water when they are working on our roads out here.
The Esmeralda County Commissioners donated a porta-camp to house our Fire turnouts and other fire department goodies.
This was brought out by the Esmeralda County Road Department a couple of weeks ago. It is all aluminum but we will eventually cover it up with old wood, board and bat style, to blend in with the rest of the old buildings in town.
John from Genoa, alias Judge Roy Bean, has possibly convinced the Genoa Fire Department to donate their old fire truck to us. They are getting a newer one and he has suggested to them where to donate the older one. It may be old to them but being that it is a 1984 Seagraves it will be the newest one in our fleet.
John says it works good and is shinny red. Hats off to Judge Roy Bean.
Before having my two proofreaders go over this and signing off I must put in a commercial.
Having trouble thinking of what to get that person that has everything? Don't want to fight the mob at the mall? Or do you just want to help out with the projects we want to do and keep Pat working? Well friends it's not to late to order our 84 page book about Gold Point, the Music CD or some T-shirts for Christmas presents. We will be happy to ship them anywhere in the U. S.
Proofreader Pat says I forgot to mention that we were in an oven a couple of weeks ago. Yep, I now know what that chocolate chip cookie feels like as he is baking. Assistant Fire Chief Dan, Fireman Pat and I had the opportunity to do some fire training in a Northtree Mobile "Live" Fire Training Unit. Wow, it was hot. Northtree travels from community to community with their rig and allows fireman to fight live fires in a controlled surrounding. It's a simulated garage fire, kitchen fire and upstairs bedroom fire. The computer runs all the various levels of fire situations. It's a big steel trailer pulled by a semi-truck. Propane fuels the fires of all kinds including rollovers and flash fires. You and two others put on the turnouts and respirators and pull the fire hose with you and attack the fires. When the computer feels you've done the job the fire goes out. You have to go into the burn room with flames all around you and above you. It lasts but maybe around 7 minutes but it's quite intense. I found it to be quite invigorating.
Well, it's time to say good night. I must now head to Las Vegas.
Ok now, until next year and the next newsletter we say to you
HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.
Happy Trails and Sunsets,
Sheriff Stone &/or Red Dog Lil
