GOLD POINT NEVADA

howdy doody one and all,
Once again it's time for a few tid bits of information from the tiny hamlet of Gold Point, Nevada. Uh- - - - what's a hamlet??? Oh well let's get to the juicy news.
First and foremost we have to correct an injustice. We must right a wrong! We must give credit where credit is due. What could it be you say??? You ARE asking aren't you?? Ok then.
Somehow in the last newsletter I somehow forgot to mention that Lola and her cantalopez were here to entertain us. She is a member of the Desert Drifters Gunfighters of Pahrump, Nevada. Guess I'm starting to get olds heimer disease or something. But how did it get by my two proofreaders-Judge/Reverend Red Dog Lil and Sam Al Amode??? Could it be that they were heimered also or just hammered??
Oh well, however it happened we must apologize for the overlook. Lola has been written about before for her great singing voice. She really sings her heart out up here in Gold Point and does it only for tips. She sang Saturday and Sunday nights during the Independence Day Weekend. We hope she'll come back next year during one of our parties and entertain us again. Next year we have to make sure her tip jar gets a little fuller cause she is worth it!!!
If we ever forget to mention someone or something that you're aware of that concerns Gold Point please let us know. We will correct the forgetfulness in the next newsletter. Thanks.
Now let's talk a little about another entertainer, Corey Hayden. He is the other half of Goldrush, our country duo band. If you recall in the last newsletter we gave you a little background about Joanie Waco, his singing partner.
Corey was born in New York in the year 19xx. He learned classical violin and played in Miami for 9 years. He and his brother Reggie sang in the Miami Boys Choir at the age of 9 for about a year.
When he was 11 he bought his first guitar in a pawn shop for $4.00 and also learned how to yodel.
He studied classical violin for 15 years before running away from home to work on a ranch in West Texas for 2 years.
He started making a living with the Raiders as the lead singer when he was 27. The group sang rock-a-billy music and he was with them for a year and a half.
After which he joined the Reno Renee Trio in Reno and Lake Tahoe. There he was playing "big band music" banging mostly on cocktail drums and bongo's. This went on for about 3 years before leaving them and singing and playing solo guitar for 2 and a half years in Chinatown in Los Angeles.
At 32 he went back to New York and joined the James E. Strates Traveling shows for the years 1964 and 65.
Corey also played Burlesque and part time Master of Ceremonies for 3 seasons.
Before going to the mid-west for a few months he played on the Bahama Star Cruise Ship for 1 season.
Getting a new agent he went to Washington State and kept busy all over the Northwest for the next 4 years. He would still play occasionally in the Northwest even though he made another home base in Sante Fe for the next 25 years before making his last move to Las Vegas.
While looking for a new gig he got another agent and this is when he met Joanie for what was supposed to be a 2 week show. After the 1st day Joanie didn't like the fact that they both played the guitar so they hired a keyboard player to finish out the show. Joanie then bought her own keyboard and they've been playing together in Nevada ever since.
Sandy and I saw them in the Sante Fe Saloon in Goldfield, Nevada in July of 2002. We liked them and their music. We invited them to play for our last years Labor Day party. Everyone liked them so much that they now play during all our large parties.
Next year we'll start giving you backgrounds of the Kingston Canyon Band members, Dawn, Thom & Bob. Then we'll tell you about the Blue Diamond Highway Bluegrass Band members-Mike, Lisa, Eve, JB and Sara. Then it will be the blue grass band Stuck in Reverse's turn. So new to us that I can only remember Peggy's name at this time.
This years Labor Day party was a little smaller than expected. We had everyone's favorite bands playing. Do you remember them all. Ok, I'll tell you again. We had the country duo Goldrush, the bluegrass band Blue Diamond Highway and the classic country rock band Kingston Canyon.
We talked with a lot of people about the bar-b-que dinners we've been serving and seems that we have to make some changes. We got the message that a good majority of the people would rather have just one meat and a better deal. It's very costly to marinate and smoke the different meats. Not to mention being labor intensive. Oops, I just mentioned it didn't I. We even had to up the price to $11. You must remember we also have to drive 200 miles each way to purchase all the foods we serve here. So, next year we are cutting the choices back to one meat each day. Probably a 10 ounce steak one night and the beef tri-tips the other night. Also we are dropping the macaroni salad. Along with the one meat you'll get unlimited fries, corn, baked beans and green beans. All this for $10 and we will also give you a wooden nickel for a drink of your choice---soda, beer, wine, or mixed drink.
Remember back in June we told you about a film company from Canada coming out and filming a wedding here?? We'll we just received a copy of the video and it's outstanding. It airs December 12th in Canada. They hope to sell the Weird Weddings series to an American network next year. When this happens I will, of course, let you know.
This last weekend we had the Boy Scouts of Las Vegas Troop 812 up here for their annual visit. It happened that they arrived Halloween night. We told them a ghost story just before they retired about a couple of spooky ghost that come out every Halloween to have a gun fight. Would you believe it, sure enough, those ghostly cowboys came out right after they all were snuggled up in their sleeping bags in their cozy tents. What a ruckus they were causing with all their shooting until Judge Red Dog and her double barrels, not "those" double barrels silly I'm talking about her shotgun, ran them off until next year. Buy the way, we had our first snow fall in the mountains around us that night. It just spit snow in town though.
They cooked up 6 different Dutch oven meals for Sandy, Walt, Dan & Diane, Mike & Karen, Jim, Tim & Sue and myself. We had a tuff time judging all of them but determined the chili topped with sweet cornbread was the winner.
I invited them back out for our Annual Fireman's Benefit Chili Cook-off during Memorial Day Weekend next year to participate in the Flag Ceremony preceding the contest. They accepted. A few of the parents will also be entering the contest as well.
As long as we've mentioned the Chili cook-off let me tell you a couple of news worthy things about next years contest.
First, the grand prize will be a highly collectible 1937 Winchester pump shotgun model 97 in excellent condition. Barring unforeseen circumstances this is being donated for cost by one of our High Desert Drifters, Monolito Morales Gonzales Gonzales Gonzales. He came from a long line of Gonzales'. Maybe the family tree didn't have a branches, don't know for sure.
Second, we will have 4 trophies for each category--judging and people's choice-1st through 4th place.
Third, I've just gotten off the phone with Linda Kass with KPVM-TV Channel 41 in Pahrump, Nevada. She will be helping us out next year both in the studio and here, in person, in Gold Point. Prior to the contest she will have a few of us in costume down to the studio to be a guest on her 1 hour morning tv show.
Then that weekend she will be graciously donating her time to come up and help with the festivities. She will be in charge of the drawing of the prizes both Saturday and Sunday. This will probably keep her pretty busy as last year there was 117 prizes donated by local people and businesses in both Goldfield and Tonopah and surrounding areas.
She will be easy to spot because she will be wearing a ribbon sash that says "Miss Hot Stuff".
We met her at the Burro Days Celebration October 25th in Beatty, Nevada.
Fred, another High Desert Drifter, arranged for us to come down and entertain the town during the event. We we're in the parade pushing a bunch of hussies on a bed while shooting our guns. Which, by the way, we brought home the 1st place blue ribbon.
Then, in between our shows, we entered the Brothel Bed Races. Fred, Jim, Dan and I were the pushers and Red Dog Lil was the soiled dove going for a ride. We proudly came in last place. Why proudly you ask??? Because, since we were all over 50 with the oldest at 68, we actually were able to finish the almost 3/4 mile course in 8 minutes and 3 seconds without having a cardiac arrest. I, along with the others, have made a sacred vow to NEVER do such a stupid thing like that ever again.
Here in Gold Point we have our races as a 50 yard dash. Not a long distance marathon were oxygen must be given out at the finish line and you must lie in the bed you just pushed till you can walk again.
We have received as a donation from Marc 3 old wood framed pictures of Goldfield for the Saloon/Museum.
Last week we got word from Nye County that they are donating a 4000 gallon tanker to the Gold Point Fire Department. We wish to give a real big thanks to the Nye County Commissioners for their generosity.
We are still working on our 1000 gallon tanker with the grant money from the Department of the Interior.
The Clampers have asked to put up one of their monuments here in Gold Point. We are in favor of this and have been told to be patient and it will happen. We thank them and Gary, who came up for a visit, ahead of time.
There is only 3 weeks left until our annual day after Thanksgiving dinner. If you're planning on coming out for dinner, served around 3, we need to know how many in your party no later than a week ahead of time so we can plan on how much food to buy. We still have a couple of rooms left if you'd like to spend the night. If you have any questions about rooms or the dinner just write us back. Last year we had around 40. So far this year we have 20 down on the list. If you're undecided until the last minute I know we'll still have food for you, so don't be shy.
Before closing I must say that I'm back to work in Las Vegas. I going to be working on that large project where the old Desert Inn used to be. It will last about a year trying to put wall covering in about 4000 rooms and bathrooms and 50 some odd floors of hallways. Needless to say except for the holidays and weekends I will not be in Gold Point much. Pat will be taking care of the B & B guests if he is available.
If I should win the Lottery or Mega Bucks I will quite working and come back to Gold Point earlier. Ok now, everyone wish me good luck.
Speaking of good luck. Tomorrow is my celebration of my birth day again. I'm 1 year closer to that magic 86 number. Yes, 26/43's of my life is now over and I still have so much to do. As an example I still have 25 more pounds of photo's to put in my album so it will be 100 pounds before I enter the that mine for the last time.
Well, until next time have a happy holiday season.
Happy Trails and Sunsets,
Sheriff Stone &/or Red Dog Lil
