GOLD POINT NEVADA

It was great having my friends here to help out.

They've all partied here in the past on a regular basis. Now in the future they’ll be coming back to party in a bigger place.

Sunday, Pat and Dean finished putting up the tar paper and bats around the building.

The boys from Iowa, Pat and George, took about 3 days to help Walt do the wiring. Then they helped out doing what ever was needed.

I was able to start roofing Sunday morning. What a project that was. There were 26 rows l0ft long on each side. Jeff was able to help me out on some of it before he had to go back to Iowa but the bulk of it
was up to me.

Everyone else was busy doing other things. It took about 10 days to finish. That includes being laid up for a couple of days because I hurt my back half way through. Seems that I’m not as limber as I once was and all that sitting at that crazy angle got to me by the end of the first week.

I carried up a bundle of shingles to the top of the first side and it started to spasm on me. Down I went. I yelled help and Ken was able to run up the ladder and catch me before I slid off the roof into
the open trench around the building.

Everyone then dropped what they were doing and helped me down.
They put me on a door and drove me down to my house and put me to bed. It was nothing serious but I had to relax and do nothing the rest of the day.

Max, Walt’s cousin who was out visiting with the other cousin Tony, had some nice pills for me to take for a couple of days. (couldn’t just lie there all day knowing that everybody else was doing something, so after a couple hours I got up and just did paperwork and light stuff.

In a couple of days I was back on the roof banging nails. This time I took more breaks more often. Instead of getting off the roof after every square, four bundles, I got off after every bundle and walked around stretching and drinking lots of water. I finished the roof up around the Wednesday after everyone, except Ken and Walt left to go back home.

Now let’s get back to the regular work week with my
friends.

Monday after Pat and Dean put some finishing touches on the outside of the building it was time to start putting down the floor.

AAAHHHH! Wrong type of wood for the floor. They sent out T & G
spruce. What I needed was clear doug fir. This did not make me a happy camper at all. I went down to my house to call the lumber yard. They told me I wasn’t specific enough when ordering. I hang paper
for a living what the hell do I know anyway.

Well, after figuring out what I needed I found I was lucky enough to be able to get it by Thursday. It had to be special milled and then be shipped to Bishop, then out to Gold Point.

I was stuck with 350 boards 16ft long of t & g spruce. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise which I talk about later.

We moved the spruce to another part of town for storage so the u.v. rays wouldn’t get to them. Then proceeded to find another project for Pat and Dean.

It was time to put in the insulation. This didn’t take very long at all. Now we can cover the walls with the white faced celetex, kind of a fiber board. I chose this for 2 reasons.

First and foremost was because that’s is what the old timers used. Secondly it is a lot easier and faster than drywall. You don’t have to deal with that messy drywall mud.

This kept Dean and Pat busy for the rest of the day. Walt and I helped out also. My back was still a little tender so all I did was screw it down. I left the lifting to the others. As usual, all I did was “screw" around while everyone else worked.

After working with the insulation and celetex for a while I was able to calm down and regain normalcy. It was time to focus again. What to do with all that spruce? Hmm. How about using it to finish the stage area. Bingo. Originally it was going to be just white faced celetex. Now it will be spruce.

You might say we were really going to SPRUCE up the stage area. Dean volunteered to do this. This was a great job for Dean. He is very good at meticulous work. It took him a couple days but it came Out
fantastik. He even sprayed it with clear shellac for that nice orange peel kinda look.

We finished out the peak of the back wall with the spruce. We even built another bar out of the spruce in the rear of the building with it.

Thursday afternoon the t&g doug fir floor arrived. We thought we'd start it to see how it was going to turn out. It was around 4 pm. when we put down the first board. I did all the squaring of the ends and cutting to length as someone would yell out the measurement.

Happy Trails and Sunsets,

Sheriff Harold T. Stone and/or Red Dog LIL
