GOLD POINT NEVADA

Subject: GOLD POINT GLEAMINGS

This is the first newsletter of GOLD POINT GLEAMINGS. I took the name from a newspaper column that ORA MAE WILEY used to write back in the 60’s or so. I shall endeavor to keep you informed on what’s happening in GOLD POINT, NEVADA. I'm in no way, shape or form a professional writer, so don’t look for a flamboyant or colorful style of writing like ERNIE HEMINGWAY. Just be happy with the JOE FRIDAY style where you get “JUST THE FACTS”

I must first mention something. I’m sending this out to all my friends and friends of GOLD POINT who have e-mailed me in the past. In keeping with the tradition that my friends already know I'm going to request something other than the norm. Rather than request those who don’t want to be on the newsletter mailing list to write me and say so. I'm requesting those who wish to STAY ON the list to write me asking to remain, this will make it easier for those who do not wish to be bothered. Easier not to be bothered. To my close friends who do not wish to be on this newsletter mailing list I say tuff pooh pooh you get it anyway.

Well it’s now April 3rd, 2000 and we have now 53 days left till the big event. More on that later. Sandy (RED DOG LIL) and I just got back from Gold Point last night. She had some friends come up from Vegas on the motorcycles Saturday. That was their first trip to Gold Point. We spent the afternoon in the HORNSILVER SALOON drinking and playing shuffleboard.

During our shuffling and drinking, H.E.R.B. showed up. For those of you who don’t know about H.E.R.B. yet, I, (the original HERB) shall fill you in on the details.

H.E.R.B., which stands for Hornsilver Extraction & Recovery Buggy, has been graciously donated to us by a new found friend, Dave Travier. He is from the Placerville, California area. There is one catch to the donation however. I must find an old engine in or around a mine and donate that to him, his hobby is collecting and restoring these old engines. I recently had the opportunity to visit friends and family in Sacramento, and while I was down there, some of my friends, Pat, Dean, Dick, and Tony and I went to visit with Dave. He showed us his collection of old engines which had to be over a hundred of them. They ranged in sizes from as small as lawn mowers to the size of a small garage. In fact the big one is so big Dave built a building just for it! He also has some Model T’s and some old Indian motorcycles and about 7 old player and nickelodeon piano’s, which I was able to donate 180 rolls of music rolls to him last November when he came up to exchange engines with me. I traded an old HERCULES, not running, for a 1919 FAIRBANKS MORSE Z engine, in running condition. It was a great trade for the both of us. We both got something we wanted. While drinking and talking, Pat found out he is related to him. It’s a small world out there people. Pat and Dave’s wife are cousins.

Anyway, back to H.E.R.B., Dave acquired it several years ago from a guy he did a job for. The guy didn’t have enough money to pay Dave, so he gave him this old WHITE truck. WHITE is not the color, but the make of this old boom truck, the year of it is something in the forties. It has a 6 cylinder flat head and Dave has it running very smoothly. Starts right up. It is a FWD MODEL, which means it is a four wheel drive, six wheel drive if you count the fact that the rears are duals. It’s a crew cab with three doors. I need to put a seat in the rear, which i have in storage. It’s a five speed with a pto winch in the bed with 500 ft of 3/8 cable on the drum. It’s got utility box sides for all our equipment. It’s just about ready to go. We will now be able to back up to a mine shaft, harness up, and be lowered into the darkness of the earth, as the name implies, we will now be able to extract and recover antique artifacts quickly and safely from the mines.

One of the first mines that we will be going to will be the one I call "KING TUT’S TOMB”. It has been sealed at the 150 ft level for about 60 years, since World War Two. I estimate is has 5000 to 7000 ft of tunnels. shafts, stopes etc. to explore. I had the opportunity a few years ago to explore the first level only. I found a few nice artifacts on that level, the best being an old steel biscuit tin. All of the ladders and collar has been removed from that level up. I was able to get in a side tunnel and look through a small break in the collar and see that from that point down all the ladders and collaring was in place and in great condition. In the very near future I'm hoping to remove the three ft. of dirt which has accumulated on top of this seal thereby giving access to the rest of the mine. If my theory is correct we should find a possible wealth of antique artifacts down there which have been entombed for over half a century, waiting for the miners to return from the great war to end all wars, who, for whatever reason, never did. We could find mining equipment, newspapers, tobacco tins, bottles, etc.

This will be captured on film, certainly by our camcorders for you to see, but what some of you don’t know is that I have been communicating with a DANIEL in GREAT BRITAIN. He is with a British production company and is interested in doing a documentary on the original HERB, GOLD POINT, and the opening of KING TUT’S TOMB. He is talking of a possible joint venture with the DISCOVERY CHANNEL here in the UNITED STATES. Daniel and I are both hoping this becomes reality. It all depends on his higher ups and his contacts in the industry. I'm hoping to do this opening Monday may 29th, right after breakfast. This way Daniel and his film crew can also be here for the world’s first ghost town rally of the new millennium, held of course at Gold Point. May 26th through the 29th. Details at ghostowns.com. Construction on the extension of the HORNSILVER SALOON will start April 22nd by Ken Gates and I. We’re going to be pushing back the back wall out another 70 ft. making it 110 ft by 16 ft. It will be constructed as the last extension in 1990 was, which was to match the existing originally built part built in 1907. We are going to add another bar against the very back wall, add a pool table, gift shoppe, dance floor and stage, to mention a few of the improvements. A lot of our friends are coming up may 5th thru the 14th to donate their time and services to help get this built. Others are coming up on the weekends throughout the month of May. If you wish to come and help, you will be well fed and taken care of. You will also he part of history in the making. We will also document this with our camcorders and be taking a lot of pictures throughout the construction process. We must have documentation preserved for the rest of mankind to see in the future. If you can't make it to help out, we would still like to see you come up for the GHOST TOWN RALLY 2000 party.

As for the GHOST TOWN RALLY 2000. So far we have one film company coming up for two days to film the event. They will be interviewing people and filming the ghost town tours. They are doing a 1 hour documentary on Nevada ghost towns. I hope to have other news media coverage up there. We have been talking with other companies and they have shown an interest. The farthest guest so far is coming from the state of MICHIGAN. We also have one couple from the state of IDAHO. I'm positive that during the party we will have many guests from the state of INTOXICATION. Looks like at least 30 of my close friends will be out to help me with this event and also to party with everyone. A lot of them haven’t seen each other since the last WILEY DAY party back in 1992. It should be a nice reunion for them. To let folks know it’s chow time I have acquired a large old school bell, it originally came from MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA. I found it at the red rooster antique shoppe in Las Vegas. Once mounted on top of the cook shack I'm sure it will be possible to hear it from anywhere in GOLD POINT.

If you haven’t checked out our website, GOLDPOINTGHOSTTOWN.COM, lately you should. We’ve added a lot of pictures and other information to it recently. We will be adding a few other things sometime later this year. Don’t forget to sign the guest book so I know you were there.

Well I think it’s about time I end this first newsletter of GOLD POINT GLEAMINGS. I don’t have a definite regular time that I will put this newsletter out. I will just keep you informed as new events come to pass or future events are about to happen. It’s probably better to write a short blurb once in a while instead of this long winded running off at the mouth epic. Please write and let me know what you think. Also don’t forget to forward this to some of your friends who might be interested in the future adventures of the life and times of SHERIFF STONE, H.E.R.B., and all his friends who come to GOLD POINT, NEVADA. Thanks for taking the time to read this novel.
